Okay...so maybe it's not so bad....

My weekend has slightly redeemed itself with tonight's dinner. I roasted chicken leg quarters on a bed of onion and yellow pepper slices, and served it with steamed sugar snap peas and the butternut squash gratin I mentioned in the previous post.
When Dev sat down to eat, he asked what the squash stuff was called. So I told him it was a "gratin." In his ever so sweet and supportive way, he asked if "gratin" was French for "off the floor." I knew I should have spit in his food.....

I have posted a pic of my wound. I have shown it with the dressing on. Believe me, you don't want me to take the bandage off.

Weekend

I was glad to read in my friend Tonya's blog that she had a good Saturday. She deserves it. I, on the other hand, did not. My weekend started with great promise. I left work around noon, picked Dev up at school and we had a picture perfect lunch at the Pizza Den. Wine, salads, caribbean shrimp pizza and Godiva chocolate cheesecake. It's enough to make you weep, huh? Well, the perfectness didn't last long...
Saturday morning I was rattling around in the kitchen, trying to get breakfast done, when I burned the shizzle out of my arm taking cheese toast out of the oven. Dealing with that made me run late getting dressed. Then I had to ride to Taos for a dress rehearsal. We got lost twice, and the rehearsal ran an hour longer than advertised. I got home around 6:00p. Dev tried to make it up to me by taking me to the brew pub for dinner. And dinner was nice. Saturday is sushi day, after all.

Dinner

So it was my turn to cook dinner tonight.

We bought a new kind of fish at the grocery store the other day, so I decided to saute it and see what happened. It was labeled "Thresher Shark." I've never heard of that. It was very inexpensive and held up really well to a quick spin around a non stick pan with a little salt, pepper and spice blend. I served it on a bed of couscous that I mixed with sauteed veggies. Then I rounded it out with some asparagus.

All in all a very respectable meal.

Meteorological Schizophrenia

Is is spring? Or is it still winter? Yesterday I sat in my humble little cube, watching snow drift up on the skateboard ramps. Today it is warm and the sky is a beautiful blue. There is very little sign of the blizzard that befell us yesterday. What gives? How are you supposed to dress for the weather if it can go from balmy to blizzard in less than 2 hours?

Hot Tamales!!!!

I like Tuesdays. Mostly because it's Dev's night to cook. This evening we had a Mexican Fiesta goin' on at our place. I came home from work to the wonderful aroma of fresh hot tamales steaming away on the stove. Dev had made pork and green chile tamales. He also made a big steamin' pot of pasole. I didn't even know what pasole was til I ate it. It's good. I'd eat it again. As a matter of fact, unless a large army shows up, I'll be eating it for about a week.

My Favorite Things Part2

Another one of my favorite things......a coffee table.

I have been living without one since I moved to Alamosa. Without a tv cabinet, my coffee table has been serving that purpose. At first it was ok. But then, I realized how much I needed a coffee table. Where do you put your feet when you turn on the TV? Where do you put your glass of wine when you are watching a movie? Where do you put the piles of things you are trying to read?

Well, this weekend Dev and I drove to Pueblo and I FINALLY BOUGHT A PIECE OF FURNITURE TO PUT THE TV ON. So now I have my coffee table back. Joy! We ate dinner on the coffee table tonight just to celebrate!

Isn't this a wonderful thing to come home to?

Dev came and picked me up after work today. Soon after arriving home, this is what appeared on the counter. We attempted to grill them outside, but due to the wind (and our lack of lighter fluid), the charcoal wouldn't light. So we were forced to head back inside and do them on the stove top.

The weather was dangerously close to warm today. It's getting close to cook out weather around here. Personally, I can't wait!

Favorite Things Part 1

I have lots of favorite things. Quite a few of those things are foods.


One of my most favorite things is breakfast for dinner. There is just something lazy and decadent about it. This is especially true after a long, stressful day.


Today was one of those days for me. So I got home around 6pm, checked my email, paid a few bills and began making the decision about dinner. I decided on a fried egg sandwich- one of my all time favorite breakfast for dinner items (eclipsed only by eggs benedict but I didn't have that kind of energy). This one was actually a "clean out the fridge" egg sandwich. It was a hodge podge of leftovers: I only had whole wheat french bread, a couple of pieces of turkey and about 3 pieces of gruyere cheese. I think these ingredients made a pretty respectable egg sandwich.
I think the left over french bread will end up as french toast in the morning.....



Tuesdays

Tuesdays are long days for me. I sing in the Adams State Community Chorus and we have rehearsals from 7 to 9pm on Tuesday nights.
This particular Tuesday was long because I also had a really big meeting today that I've been preparing for and kinda dreading for over a week now. The meeting turned out ok, but after it was over, I felt drained. I felt like going home and vegitating. But I didn't. I took my fiance out for a nice steak, then dutifully showed up for rehearsal.
Now that I'm home, I feel restless. Hopefully I won't have another one of those sleepless nights. Perhaps I should take some Valerian root right now, to give my sleepiness a boost. I can't take Tylenol PM or Sominex because they both make me feel hung over the next day. I have another mammoth meeting tomorrow morning (and I have to keep the minutes- which means I can't fall asleep). No rest for the wicked, I suppose.

Insomnia

I truly envy people who fall asleep easily. I do not. Sunday seems to be the worst day of the week for me to sleep.
The minute I lay my head on the pillow, my brain kicks into high gear. Unfortunately, I'm not thinking about productive things. I usually lie awake worrying about things over which I have no control. For instance....I worry about what will happen if one of my parents gets sick. I worry about what would happen if I get sick. I worry about bills. I worry about needing a car. I worry about what will happen when I run out of things to worry about.
I come by this trait honestly. My mother is a professional worrier and she has trained me well. As a matter of fact, she's probably still up, lying in bed, worrying about things. The only difference is, she doesn't have a blog.

"Keeping Mum"

Dev and I rented a movie this weekend entitled "Keeping Mum." It had 2 of my favorite British actors in it- Maggie Smith and Rowan Atkinson.
I think everyone should run out right now and rent this movie. It was pretty dirn good. It wasn't the usual Rowan Atkinson "Mr. Bean" kinda movie. Neither was it a huge period piece like other Maggie Smith epics. It was truly bizarre. I can't really say much about it without giving things away, but Rowan Atkinson once again plays a small parish reverend (as if he could top his small, but gut wrenchingly funny role in "Four Weddings and a Funeral." Who could ever forget the Father, Son and Holy Spigot line?). Adding even further weirdness to the cast is Patrick Swayzie, as a pompous, perverted American golf pro. Kristin Scott Thomas is also in the movie. I've never been a huge fan of hers (I got a little overdosed when she was dying in the cave during "The English Patient.").

Sushi Update

This past Friday (the 13th) was sushi day again at Milagro's here in sunny Alamosa, CO. And once again, the sushi was great. I notice each time that the menu gets a little more in depth. This time there was the addition of a yellow tail roll. That makes me happy because I love yellow tail. There are also lots of veggie roll choices. This makes things easier when you are dragging people along who are not into eating raw fish.
Anyway, I didn't want to put this post on the Alamosa blog because I think I've posted enough about sushi.
But it is a great way to start a weekend.....

Alamosa

I have been getting some comments on my blog posts recently. This makes me very happy. It makes me feel like maybe I'm helping someone, or at the very least entertaining someone.
One person in particular left an amusing comment on my Easter Dinner blog. She seemed very happy to read that I was able to find the more fancy ingredients for my dinner at our local grocery stores.
This comment made me laugh....because last July when I came for a brief visit (prior to THE BIG MOVE), one of the first things I did was tour the local grocery stores, to make sure I was not going to have to have things flown in. Specifically, I was interested in the cheese selection.
I am a confirmed cheese snob. I love cheese, but I love good cheese. I try to avoid any cheese that is extruded onto plastic sheeting. Because I love cheese and I love to cook, I am used to a certain level of grocery quality.

Magazines

I love magazines...cooking ones...crafting ones...

If I could afford to, I swear I'd subscribe to 100 magazines. I am especially fond of "Smithsonian Magazine," "Saveur," "Cooks Illustrated," I could go on and on...

I also love the internet. But I truly hope what people are saying about print media is wrong. I think the world would be very boring without magazines and books. There is just something about coming home in the evening, and sitting on the couch with a magazine. Or curling up in the bed with a great book. No website can replicate that feeling. It's a total experience. It's about the light in the room, the beverage of choice, the feeling of pampering and nostalgia. Anyway, those are the contents of my brain this afternoon. Where did I put my copy of this month's "Good Housekeeping?"

A Step Into the Great Unknown

I have recently been asked to write some pieces for a brand new blog being created to showcase Alamosa.

So far I have contributed a piece about sushi, and I have 2 more in the pipeline about pedicures and a follow up sushi piece. Instead of publishing the articles on both blogs, I will simply write a teaser on this blog and then link it to the Alamosa sight.

She is one of those people who can’t help but be cool. Everything she does is art- photography, phenomenal writing- the whole enchilada. Debra Goodman (my boss at the Alamosa County Chamber of Commerce) is one of the most driven people I have ever met. She does not understand the meaning of the word impossible. If it’s good for Alamosa, Debra will work tirelessly to make it become a reality. Then there’s me. I have no idea why I’m a part of this ventur…

Blogging

I love blogging. I’ve always enjoyed writing, and my blog allows me to connect my love of food with my love of the written word. I am just starting out, and I have a ton of stuff to learn about it. But I’m having so much fun, there’s no way I could stop.

One of the coolest things about having a blog is finding out that there are people reading it. I mean people other than your existing friends and family. My friend Tonya put a link to my blog in her blog, and before I knew it, I had people I’ve never met before commenting on the stories I tell about my life. How cool is that?

I’m sure this is a rather PollyAnna view on things, but I feel like this is a way to greatly enlarge my circle of friends. Tonya has zillions of readers, many of whom over the years have become pretty close friends of hers. She met the love of her life through her blog. I’ve already met the love of my life, but I’m a true believer in the idea that you can’t have too many friends. I depend on friends to te…

Breakfast Table Questions

One of my favorite things about weekend breakfast is the unhurried pace.

During the week, it seems like Dev and I hit the ground running. Almost every single minute is taken up by some task that has to be done to get ready for work.

On the weekends, however, we usually are not on a time schedule, so breakfast can be more involved, and there is plenty of time for talking while finishing your coffee or hot tea.

Sometimes Dev and I talk about our plans for the weekend. This particular Sunday morning, I decided to ask questions about Easter.

My significant other, Devin, has done quite a bit of studying about the Jewish tradition. It never ceases to amaze me what he knows about the history and symbolism of all things Hebrew.

Our conversation started with my question about Easter. I wanted to know if Easter happened before, during or after Passover. Devin hopped up, and returned to the breakfast table a few seconds later with some huge book. We decided that Easter happens during Passover…

Easter Dinner

Celebration in my family equals food. Consequently, all holidays equal food. Easter is no exception.

Because we do not have any additional days off for Easter, a trip home is out of the question. So….that means we can make our very first ever Family Easter Dinner (like without our moms actually doing the big cooking).

We began the menu negotiations last week. Although ham is traditional in my family, I didn’t want Dev to feel bound by that. The task of meat preparation was assigned to Dev, so I felt like he should make the choice. I have been after him for the last few weeks to fix his super scrumptious Cornish game hens (made with cream and stout), so I made that suggestion. He agreed, mostly because he figured it would shut me up. All that remained was side dish and dessert selection. These were relegated to me. Stuck at Work on a Friday

Here I sit.....staring out my cubicle window.....I have so many things I could be doing......

Why are Friday's always like this? I really don't have anything special planned for the weekend, but I can't wait to get it started. I guess slow Friday's are worse even than normal Friday's. Today is Good Friday, so lots of people are not working. That means Joe and I are sitting here, staring at each other.
I have received a paycheck for the first time in over 3 months, so part of my readiness to leave here is my desire to go spend it. I have a grocery list about a mile long...not to mention kitchen appliances to buy......

I suppose I should act busy for a few more minutes.

Friends

What would we do in life without our friends?????

I have always had lots of friends. And I've always had friends that go back all the way to high school. I think I have some of the best friends in the whole world.

This is one of the reasons it was so hard to move away from Savannah. But I have learned something very valuable about my new home........

This place is full of wonderful people. I mean, creative, funny, outgoing, intelligent, artistic, selfless individuals. People that I hope I can count on as friends for years and years to come. Somehow I seem to have fallen into the good graces of these people, and they have adopted me as one of their own. I don't think they will ever know how grateful I am for the help and support they have given me. Some have offered sympathetic shoulders, some have offered jobs. But they are all willing to give.

I hope I can be the same welcoming foundation for future transplants to the beautiful San Luis Valley!!!! This is truly a place…
